Popular for his dramatic and comedic performances, he is considered to be one of the most admired and recognizable film stars worldwide, and is regarded as an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Janet Marylyn a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks, an chef who traveled the world. His mother, who was initially known as "Fraga", was part of a Portuguese family. His father, however, was mostly English. Tom grew up in the family he refers to as "fractured". He did not have any acting experience prior to college. This is the reason that helped him begin his acting career. He was an auditioner in the downtown area of Cleveland for an open-air community theatre production. Then the show, he was contacted to Cleveland by the director. This was the point where his acting career started.
